- George Graham, a confidential clerk for a business house, gets a letter from his father appealing to him for money assistance. Tempted by the desire to save his father, Graham takes some money from the cash drawer and falsifies his accounts. Later he is discovered and sent to prison. We see him working as a convict beside a noted criminal, "Muggsy" Smith. Graham is released from prison and secures a job as gardener with Helen Langdon, a rising young novelist. The mistress is attracted to her handsome gardener, and in several pretty comedy scenes she is shown superintending his work oftener than is necessary. Miss Langdon finds that Graham is educated and she takes him into her home as her private secretary. One night on returning from a ball Miss Langdon is attacked by a burglar who proves to be "Muggsy" Smith. Graham enters and after a terrible fight is knocked out by the burglar's blackjack. "Muggsy" recognizes Graham as his old jailmate and comes back to blackmail him. Graham goes away rather than have himself betrayed to his mistress, whom he has learned to love. He writes her a farewell letter, but the authoress will not have him go. She sends for him, and in a pretty love scene makes clear to him that he must remain with her regardless of his past fault. The story ends with the authoress in the arms of her devoted private secretary.
